Have you given any thought to perhaps having a supplemental post, which you can use in a similar way to the way FFA use the personal post? Call it say they Thunderdome, and if anons get stuck arguing the equivalent of "No, he's not," "Yes, he is" you can freeze it on the main post, after a few hours or whatever, and tell them to take it to the Thunderdome. That lets the anons in that discussion carry on until their fingers fall off, without it taking over flat view for hours on end. You could even maybe make that unmodded space and just leave them to it. It's just a thought. Thank you for your hard work btw.
Reposting my comment from the main thread: can we please expand the spam rule to limit the # of posts one person can make in a short amount of time? I have no issues with a hands off approach to threads and organization, but posting 100+ comments of nothing but fic titles and summaries in less than an hour is straight up spamming and preventing people from actually using the meme in any meaningful way.
Thanks for your comment. (Also, thanks to the other two people who linked the thread in question.) We talked about it, and for a couple of reasons it doesn't seem feasible at this time to enforce a comment limit. We'd like to focus on the content of comments, rather than the number. We also believe our current spam rule is adequate to cover the situation and to keep spam under control in the future.
If you're going to go on a heavyhanded screening/deleting spree, could you at least screen/delete entire threads? This thing where people want explanations and you leave up the original comment(s) and delete the explanations, or where people act like butthurt babies and you only delete the people pointing out the butthurt is fucking ridiculous.
We do not delete comments, only screen them. We try to only screen comments that violate meme rules or that are tactically similar to past attempts to troll the community at large. Because we do only screen comments rather than delete, we continue to have a record of every comment made on meme. We think most comments can be responded to without violating meme rules and people do manage to rephrase and repost if they accidentally misspeak. If you are unsure why a particular comment was screened, we are happy to explain here in the mod post. If you understand why a comment was screened, but you just wish it hadn't been, consider whether there are better places for you to post such comments. This meme was never intended to be the sole place for people to discuss hockey rpf fandom.
While we are not big fans of name-calling, the name in question is fairly mild and wasn't directed to anyone on meme. We decide these on a case-by-case basis and don't think this comment in particular requires screening, but thank you for contacting us. The next one might!
Would you consider creating an entirely separate post for Patrick Kane discussion once the current post is done? I know that there's no outright reason to ban him, but I think I and other nonnies would appreciate a space where we don't have to come across him unless we chose to. Or even just a post specifically to do with the rape case and repercussions thereof.
We understand your frustration and desire for a Kane-free space, but we don't think a separate post is feasible at this time. The rape investigation and its handling and fallout likely won't be active topics forever. If we perceive an ongoing problem going forward, we might take some form of action. In the meantime, we have IP logging on and have been/will continue screening anyone who seems like they're being unnecessarily inflammatory.
IP logging will be turned off eventually, though I don't have a set date for that. Rest assured, we wouldn't switch to permanent IP logging without informing the meme.
I've noticed a lot of really benign comments have been getting screened lately. As a flat memer, I'd see nothing that violated meme rules but the comment count would go down. Have there been new, unofficial rules added recently that explain the uptick in censorship?
We haven't added any new rules, but if we're screening a comment, we have a reason. If you have a question about a specific comment, I can try and answer that.
Do keep in mind that we have IP logging on right now and could be responding to suspicious IPs, people responding multiple times to the same comment as if they're different people, etc. that might not be obvious to flat memers.
Again, if there's a specific comment and you don't understand why it was screened, we're happy to explain. I can't respond to a broad inquiry about "censorship" except to say that if we're screening it, we probably don't think it's benign.
Hi, I just anon-failed at http://dekedangle-rpfanon.dreamwidth.org/4402.html?thread=20871986#cmt20871986. (I have no idea how, or why my username ended up as comment subject, ugh.)
IP logging isn't on at the moment and hasn't been for about a week. You can always tell if it is or isn't by opening a comment box. If IP logging is on, it will say "Notice: This account is set to log the IP addresses of everyone who comments" under the Post Comment/Preview/More Options buttons below the comment box.
We don't announce it when we turn on IP logging, but the comment box will always notify you when we are using that option.
Mods, can you please clarify why comments are being frozen? Are we seriously not allowed to ever mention Kane here? No one was saying anything that violated any of the rules that I can see.
Of course you're allowed to mention Patrick Kane. He is not a banned subject, and there have been other threads involving him that have not been frozen or screened. However, the thread devolved into name calling, and, parenting up, I suspected that there may have been people trying to start wank. Rule #1 is that mods can freeze and screen threads at their discretion. I don't think meme will miss out on all that much in having to quit this argument for a bit.
I get why you froze the subthreads involving name calling, but it seemed like there was also some civil discussion/disagreement going on. It seems kind of shitty that a couple of people being dicks shuts the entire conversation down.
Sorry about that; I didn't realize it was broken. I can't fix it right this second but I or the other mod will take care of it sometime today. Thanks for letting us know!
We had a troll, still active, who used to create censorship wank every time we screened their (abusive) comments. They clearly viewed us allowing comments and criticism of the modding as a loophole where they could create wank without modly intervention, so we had to take it away from them.
You can still contact us, of course. We're open to suggestions, and we'll tell you if you ask us why we did something. We just ask that you do it here, on the Mod Post.
It seems to me that certain comments on the svmadelyn thread need to be removed. Rather than discussing the topic, people seem to be being nasty about her.
I've always appreciated this meme compared to the other hockey anon meme because the nastiness regarding talking people wasn't allowed. I think its necessary that that continues even if people don't want to agree with what an individual is saying. Thank you for looking in to it.
I'll look through the thread, but it's over 100 comments. Could you link to comments you think cross the line in the future, if not in reply to this comment? The Mods are human and I, for one, am currently trying to deal with an Internet connection from Hell. We could have missed some things. We don't allow personal attacks on this meme, and that policy isn't going to change.
It's at the point where we can't really discuss anything serious without it being frozen or screened. Endless mean spirited and insulting comments are still allowed.
What is your complaint, exactly? That we're freezing/screening too much or not enough? Personal attacks aren't allowed on this meme and never have been. If you think something has crossed a line, c&p the link to the comment on the Mod post to let us know. It's a busy time of year and the Mods are only human; we could've missed something.
You're right; it's against the rules to make locked info public on meme. And I appreciate your comment, because, frankly, I am never going to be able to keep track of who does or does not lock.
I screened as a "just in case" kind of thing because this was pretty mild -- it just sort of referred to something, and something that could be independently verified without having anything to do with oflights at that, but we have some trolls who don't like her so it's probably just as well to adhere strictly to the rule in this case.
